If you are in the Bountiful area:
A CALL TO ACTION ON PROPERTY TAXES
Attend one of the following Town Meetings
November 27, 2007 7:00 PM at the Bountiful City Library 725 S Main in Bountiful
November 29, 2007 7:00 PM at The American Legion 55 W. 200 S. in Bountiful.
At these meetings, we will:
1. Learn what the legislature is planning to do on property taxes (over 20 bills have already been filed).
2. Develop action plans for making and holding elected officials accountable if they fail to satisfactorily address the property tax issue.
3. Develop contingency plans for a Proposition 13 type movement if the legislature does not fix the problem.
4. Review the Davis County property tax abatement which is only for this year.
5. Organize to attend upcoming budget hearings where the property tax decisions are really made.
6. Develop a schedule for citizen lobbyist training.
7. Set up e-mail lists and telephone trees in order to ensure that everyone is kept up-to-date.
8. Establish a public relations program.
9. Address other issues that those in attendance may have.
These are non-partisan meetings. They are not organized or run by any government officials. They are simply people coming together to inform one another on what is going on around them and to unite together to make sure that we maintain our freedom.
It is necessary to act immediately because the citizens of Utah have been hit especially hard by property taxes this year and with the holidays coming, many Utahans will have to cut back on holiday purchases in order to be able to pay their property taxes. Worse yet, some of our fellow citizens living on fixed incomes will have to cut back on food, medications, heating and other necessities of life in order to pay huge property tax increases.
This is not the first time nor will it be the last time that our government does something that we disagree with, however, all too often we fail to take action because we are too busy, because we don't know what to do or because we feel that one person can't make a difference.
When we do act, politicians listen and strategically retreat. Then when things quiet down, they do exactly what they originally planned by doing it in increments.
We can't let this continue. As citizens, we need to do more than vote. We must become part of the decision making process rather than belatedly reacting after the decisions have already been made by elected officials and their special interest allies.
Don't let uncertainty keep you from making a difference and standing up for your rights. Get involved and help find citizen friendly solutions to the property tax issue. If you don't, the politicians and the high paid lobbyists for the taxing entities will make the decisions and the solutions they come up with will definitely not be citizen friendly.
The time has come for the people to assume their rightful place in this "government by the people for the people." Now is the time to take a stand for freedom and to ensure that the citizens voice is heard. Attend these meetings!
